About Trauma-Informed Movement

Evidence-based studies have found that effective forms of mental health treatment also include the body in the healing process.

Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence-based adjunctive treatment for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This movement-based program is the only empirically validated yoga-based practice to have met the criteria for inclusion in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Policies (NREPP). Through this practice, opportunities are provided to facilitate present moment experiences in order to support participants in safely engaging and interacting with their bodies through physical shapes and forms. TCTSY has foundations in Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory, and Neuroscience, and it was featured in Bessel van der Kolk's book, The Body Keeps the Score.

Although this program was initially created for participants to experience yoga-related shapes, this class is better described as a Movement Meditation. No yoga experience is needed or necessary to participate in this class. Participants will be offered opportunities to engage in seated movements, standing shapes, and balancing shapes with or without the use of weights, blankets, blocks, or any other supportive items. Though this practice was established with trauma survivors in mind, almost ANYONE can benefit from this self-directed, supportive form of movement that focuses on empowerment and choice-making in the present moment. The class helps to strengthen participants' ability to be in the present moment, regulate emotions, and assist with responding to life's circumstances rather than reacting to them.

Our HealTree founder, Catrina Stiller, received a 300-hr certification to facilitate Trauma Centered Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY). With this certification, she leads a donation-based, virtual Movement Meditation held on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. If you are interested in attending this class, but the date and time doesn't work for you, let us know. More dates and times will be added to the calendar in the future.

This offering is open to the community. You do not have to be a client of HealTree or have an established therapy practice to participate, though clients receiving psychotherapy services can use these sessions as adjunctive treatment to existing clinical work.

If you are interested in participating, please fill out the interest form. More information about the practice can be found below.

You can refer to the videos below for more information on TCTSY and an example of this practice, demonstrated by Catrina.

FAQs

How do I join?
The first step would be to fill out the interest form. Once received, we will reach out to schedule a brief introductory phone call at a mutually agreeable date and time. During this call, we will ask some questions about your experience with movement classes and ongoing support systems. After the short call, you will receive an email containing the session times and Zoom links.

How much does it cost?

There is a sliding scale of suggested donation amounts with the lowest suggested amount being $15. Payment can be made a number of different ways and payment options will be shared in the enrollment email. We never want finances to be prohibitive of joining. Folks are welcome to join whether or not they can contribute financially.

Are these sessions online? Do I need to turn my camera on?

The sessions are currently offered online via Zoom. It is entirely optional to have your camera on or off. We ask that during the session, you practice with your microphone off. You are welcome to connect before or after the movement practice, if you'd like, and it is completely acceptable if you do not.

Is there talking/processing?

There is not a processing component to these sessions. The session is approximately 50 minutes of optional movement with about 5 minutes at the beginning and at the end for questions, feedback, and/or connection.

Do I have to stay for the whole session or can I come and go?

If you need or want to leave at any point, you are welcome to leave the session. You are also welcome to leave the meeting open and mute the sound or step into another room if you would like the option to return later in the practice. If you are ever running late for class, please feel free to join at any point during the 60 minutes. If no participant is present by 15-20 minutes after the hour, the session will be closed.
