The Science Behind Breathwork

Breathwork is the conscious awareness of your breath.  There are many different types of breath techniques and all types of breathwork offer improved mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing.  When an individual practices breathwork, they can increase their self-awareness and patience, reduce stress, anxiety and grief, release trauma and fear stuck in the body, increase energy levels, and reduce physical pain.

As humans, when we experience an emotion our bodies are affected.  For example, when we feel happy and calm, our breath slows and deepens.  When we feel scared or nervous, our breath speeds up and becomes shallower.  Our brain receives these signals from our body and acts accordingly.  When we practice breathing techniques, we are able to send different signals to our brain which helps to regulate our nervous system.

In addition, breath techniques can help provide us with something to focus our attention, thus removing our attention from the object, person, or thought that may be causing us discomfort or distress.  These breathing techniques also work to release the physical stress and tension that stores in the body caused by the discomfort.  A regular breathwork practice modifies our brain circuits, permanently, suggesting that breathing techniques increase our resilience to life’s stressors that have not even happened yet.
