If you are one of the many who struggle to make decisions, and you look to others for advice, you are not alone. You’re probably indecisive because you’re not connected to your body, and you are attempting to live life through your mind.
This is not your fault and simply a product of your human experience. You’re living in your mind because your body carries intense emotions that are unprocessed. So, your mind is simply a safer place to be. You may have learned this as a protective and adaptive coping skill. The good news is you have the ability to learn a new way.
Practice being in your body so you can begin to trust yourself. You have an innate guidance system within your body, and you do not need to look to others for permission or the answer. Being in your body is a process and can take repeated practice sessions.
Here’s one way to begin connecting to the sensations of your body.
- I invite you to practice by taking a look at your hands.
- Notice your fingers, palms, tops of your hands.
- Perhaps you begin to close and then open your hands.
- As you take this action, notice, maybe, the sensations of your hands and fingers moving.
- You may notice the temperature of your hands, whether they are dry or clammy, tight or loose, tingly or numb.
- You may not notice any sensations at all. This is okay and perfectly normal.
- What did you become aware of? Even being aware that you didn’t feel anything is a success.
