How Do I Find the Right Therapist for Me?

September 2025

Finding the right therapist can feel like standing at the edge of an unfamiliar forest — you know there’s a path forward, but you’re not quite sure where to step first. At HealTree, we believe this journey is deeply personal, and that finding a therapist who feels like a good fit is one of the most important steps in your healing process.

Therapy isn’t about “fixing” you — it’s about having a safe, supportive space where you can explore who you are, what you’ve been through, and how you want to grow. The relationship between you and your therapist is at the heart of the work, so choosing someone who makes you feel comfortable, seen, and understood is essential.

Here are a few gentle guideposts as you begin:

1. Get curious about what you need

Take a quiet moment to reflect on what’s bringing you to therapy. Are you looking for help navigating anxiety or depression, processing grief, or untangling the impact of trauma? Do you want a space for self-discovery, or support in building healthier relationships? We have a list of the Types of Support We Offer to help you identify what you’re looking for from therapy. At HealTree, we value seeing symptoms as an opportunity to explore root causes, rather than focusing on a diagnosis. The support you need may evolve as your therapy journey unfolds.

It’s also okay if you’re not entirely sure what you need yet. Many people begin therapy simply knowing they want life to feel different, lighter, or more manageable. That’s enough. (You don’t need a 10-point action plan — just a willingness to show up as you are, mismatched socks and all.)

2. Explore therapist profiles

As you look through therapist directories or practice websites, notice how you feel as you read. Does their tone feel inviting? Do they mention approaches or values that resonate with you?

Therapists have different styles — some are more structured and solution-focused, while others are more reflective and exploratory. There’s no right or wrong style; what matters most is what helps you feel supported. (Kind of like choosing a favorite tea — it’s all about what soothes your nervous system.)

3. Trust the first conversation

Your first session is your chance to ask questions and get a sense of their presence. And no, you do not have to dump all your trauma right away!

You might ask:

  • What experience do you have with what I’m going through?
  • How would you describe your style in sessions?
  • What might the first few sessions look like?

Pay attention not just to their answers, but to how you feel during the conversation. Do you feel safe to be yourself, or do you find yourself holding back? Your body often knows before your mind does. (Think of it as a “vibe check” for your nervous system.)

4. Give it a little time

It can take a few sessions to find your rhythm together. Healing takes time, and so does building trust.

If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to talk with your therapist about it — and it’s also okay to try someone new. This is your journey. You are allowed to advocate for the support you need. (Therapy is similar to dating – you may have to meet a few different people before finding a good fit.)

5. Remember: you are not alone

Seeking therapy is an act of courage. It means you are choosing to care for yourself, to turn toward your feelings, and to open the door to healing.

At HealTree, we hold deep respect for the bravery it takes to begin. We heal through connection — to ourselves, and to one another. The right therapist can become a steady companion as you navigate the twists and turns of your own inner landscape.
