Creativity positively impacts mental health. Research shows that creative outlets relieve both stress and anxiety. For those who have experienced trauma, creativity helps lessen the feelings of shame, anger, and depression associated with that trauma. In addition, creativity inspires new thinking patterns and playfulness. Creativity is known to renew and revitalize individuals as they are able to express themselves in new and different ways. Military medical centers are now embracing creative outlets for soldiers with PTSD as soldiers often have difficulty expressing their thoughts and feelings verbally. Creativity is allowing the soldiers to express themselves and share their thoughts and feelings in a way that promotes acceptance and healing.
Embracing creativity often allows one to practice mindfulness and enter into a flow state also known as being in the zone. Essentially, this is heightened present moment awareness and often feels blissful and relaxing. Just being in the moment in this flow state increases our feelings of positivity, productivity, and overall happiness.
