Self-empowerment occurs when you makes a conscious decision to take charge of their own life. Often it involves making choices, taking action, and feeling confident in your ability. People who are empowered understand their strengths and weaknesses and are motivated to grow. One way to empower yourself is to have the courage to face and write your story.
Empowerment through writing your story has many benefits including processing emotions, unburdening yourself, connecting with others, helping others to feel not alone, and being heard. Writing also gives clarity to thoughts, increases the connection between your heart and mind, and increases your creativity.
Empowerment through writing is also about regulating your nervous system. Writing also allows you to create space between your true self and your thoughts. Oftentimes thought responses to situations trigger the nervous system. This triggering may activate the sympathetic nervous system, also known as fight or flight and may manifest in the form of psychological and physiological responses such as anxiety, pain, and anger. After the trigger has passed, a person should move into their parasympathetic system, also known as resting and digesting or recovery. This does not always occur automatically and it may be difficult to return to a rest state. The inability to return to the resting state can increase pain, anxiety, anger, and other difficult experiences.
Through writing, you may be able to create enough space between your true self and your thoughts to assist in the process of returning to rest and recovery. In this created space, you are also able to gain freedom over their thoughts and power to choose your responses rather than reacting out of their heightened nervous system response.
Starting Your Story guided by Lindsey Pope invites participants to use writing as a method to empower themselves in the realm of creativity, clarity, and connection. In this interactive program, participants will practice writing for growth and receive some easy and effective steps to start their own story. Participants will also learn helpful strategies to continue the practice on their own time. Lindsey Pope is passionate about sharing laughter and love through writing. She is a self-published author of Found in Faith and Wisdom from the Womb, and her first children’s picture book Sheldon’s Time will be released late summer of 2022.
